31 // It Was HARD, but It Was WORTH It - My Crazy, Yet Beautiful Breastfeeding Journey
Wednesday Feb 17, 2021

When I found out Miles had been starving at 2 weeks, our incredibly hard breastfeeding journey began. We fought for the first 6 months of his life, rebuilding my milk supply, supplementing with donor milk, navigating nipple shields, breast pumps, supplemental nursing systems, weaning off the bottle back to the breast, and then correcting latch and breaking him from clamping down when nursing.
It has been the hardest piece of my motherhood journey, but also the most rewarding. There were many weeks where I had to just tell myself to make it through that present day and if I still wanted to quit in the next I could. Each day I found renewed energy, strength, and dedication.
My story is a testament to the value of support. No way would I have made it without my husband, my sister, lactation support, and my friends. Thankfully most breastfeeding stories don't look like mine. However, if you find yourself struggling and you want to fight for this, I hope my story reminds you that it will get better and it will be beautiful. I'll be over here rooting you on Mama!
Please share this story and the podcast if your'e a fan! It means the world.
All the love,
Sarah

Many of us spend most of our pregnancy researching and planning our birth, but do little preparation for one of the biggest, first hurdles in motherhood… breastfeeding. Today IBCLC Alicia Duncan is back and we have put together 2 episodes dedicated to preparing you for your best breastfeeding journey possible ( lots of prayer hands here).
In part 1 we will cover learning hand expression, collecting colostrum before baby arrives, importance of skin-to-skin, first-latch/ golden hour, how exactly the baby effectively extracts milk, milk production, engorgement and how to handle it, should you pump or should you offer a pacifier in those early days, how often should you feed and for how long, and why it's ok for baby to pacify at the breast.
Truly much of our conversation today revolves around what those early days will look like, thinking about it all from the baby's perspective, and what you can do to set yourself up for success.
We've created a downloadable Prenatal and Beyond Breastfeeding Resource Guide just for you! You can find it in the Mama Collective FB page, OR on my website: https://www.mamainspired.com/breastfeeding-guide.
We hope you ate all this up and that you will share it with all your mamas-to-be! Stay tuned for Part 2!

This is Part 2 of the Prenatal and Beyond Breastfeeding Guide. Today IBCLC Alicia Duncan, CEO of Nourish Lactation and I cover what a proper latch looks like, how to help baby latch, signs baby is transferring, signs there is a latch issue, troubleshooting latch, signs of tongue ties/lip ties, how they are diagnosed and treated, WE EVEN talk co-sleeping vs bed-sharing and how to do it safely as a breastfeeding mom.
We've made it to the end of our breastfeeding series and at the end of the episode we send you mamas off with a message we hope you'll remember. We must be compassionate towards others and ourselves in the breastfeeding journey. Sometimes it doesn't work out like we thought, hoped, or how society deems acceptable. You must fight to your own limit and then feel proud of your intention and effort.
Lastly, the Mama Collective, Alicia and I are here to support you. We admire you, see your strength, and praise you for doing the very best with what you have. Be as proud and supportive of yourself as we are.
If you have made it this far in the breastfeeding series, THANK YOU! Please share with your mama friends and loved ones, so they might feel prepared for the journey ahead.
All the love,
Sarah

Today we're speaking on that tough journey to motherhood, the one many of us experience by surprise and often all too quietly. Tiffany Griffin hadn't spoken of her multiple miscarriage story in a long time, but today recalls those four years she put behind her. As she relives this story she is reminded of just how hard that road was, how she coped by simply looking forward, and ultimately uncovered some lessons she wishes to offer all the mamas listening.
Tiffany hopes her story inspires moms to hold onto that vision of their family, and to not be scared out of the journey. She wants to encourage moms to speak to their partners and family who are experiencing the loss with them, allow emotions to be heard, and healing to happen through mutual support. Lastly, she wants to remind us all that it's our job to educate our children, so that they may seek comfort instead of isolation should they endure such loss.
Sharing stories like these and enlightening our collective is how we rid of this isolation culture when it comes to miscarriage. Please help us in our mission and SHARE!
All the love,
Sarah

Marisa Kimmel is with us today and her story is one you will not soon forget. She's a mama of a beautiful two year old boy and the way she navigates motherhood so honestly is truly inspiring. Through growing up with Alopecia (hair-loss) and now having made the decision to get a preventative double mastectomy, Marisa sees that her responsibility and gift as a mother is to be open through the good and bad.
She wants her son to know that emotions are normal, that it's ok to feel them and accept them. She sees opportunity through her own day-to-day struggles to teach him empathy, compassion, and that the village of support in our lives are there to do just that…help when we need it.
Her story will remind you to be kind to yourself, to love yourself and your body as it exists, that you are beautiful just as you are. It's also a reminder that our children learn just as much, if not more from our struggles and transformations in life, and that there is no pressure to be perfect, but to simply be human.
Go follow Marisa on Instagram @marisakimmel and PLEASE SHARE her incredible story!

After 2 miscarriages I felt the need to be open to change, to seek a deeper understanding of my current health, to explore new avenues within fertility health, and find new ways to bring more peace to my womb. Today I want to share my successful conception journey, what I did different, what I learned, and how I am feeling NOW at 22 weeks.
While I may never be able prove that these changes are why this 3rd pregnancy stuck, I do believe that through the help of Eastern medicine and Holistic health I was able to preserve the energy I needed to grow this baby. This conception journey brought a whole new awareness to my mind and body and exposed truly common sense conclusions of imbalances and deficiencies that may have been affecting my fertility health.
My hope is that this episode inspires you to explore, sparks interest in the marriage of Eastern and Western medicine, and encourages to you see changes and uncertainty as an opportunity to learn more about yourself, your body, and the value of right now.
All the love,
Sarah

Life in uncertainty can be all consuming. Whether you are trying to conceive, experiencing pregnancy after miscarriage, or living through the many struggles in motherhood, we must learn to surrender. When we learn to surrender we release energy spent attempting to control an outcome, allowing us to redirect that energy to what serves us in the moment.
Today we have the pleasure of learning from a queen of mom-spiration herself, Samantha Kellgren. She is a health and mindset coach who helps women become more aware of the happiness available to them in the moment, without guilt, and without feeling the need to earn the self-NURTURING they already deserve.
Learn what it means to nurture yourself and what that looks like for YOU! Share this episode with all your mamas and get to know the spunky genius, Samantha Kellgren of Simply Well Coaching.
All the love,
Sarah

After her non medically indicated induction and 8 days in the NICU, Sarah was happy to finally be bringing her baby girl home. However, once home the trauma hit and she struggled to bond with her daughter. When she decided to speak up about her postpartum bonding experience and her birth, she received the support she needed and began to make the connection with her sweet girl.
Today Sarah shares her story to encourage moms like you to educate and advocate for yourself, to ask questions, and understand that if you're not connecting with your new miracle as you expected you would, that you're not alone.
This episode speaks to unnecessary induction, failed induction, risks of cesarean section, VBAC, postpartum bonding with baby, birth trauma, and postpartum support. "If you don't know your options, you don't have any." - Diana Korte and Roberta Scaer
Birth stories inspire us to learn and are testimonies of what is possible. Share this story and help a mama avoid an unnecessary induction/ cesarean section. Plant that seed my friend.
All the love,
Sarah

Sarah's birth didn't go exactly to plan, in fact some may see some parts of her birth as traumatic. However, when she thinks back to the events and how she felt, it's all still "beautiful." You see, Sarah's sister-in-law experienced a traumatic birth. Her story scared her and she knew that she would need to be prepared and well supported for the birth of her own little girl.
A long birth center labor and ultimately a transfer to the hospital are among a few of the detours along the way. But because she had put in the work, prepared mentally, and built a dream team of care providers and family, she felt empowered by her birth.
While birth can be unpredictable and often doesn't go according to the "birth plan," it doesn't mean you aren't in control of you and your baby's story. Knowledge is BIRTH power. In the case of labor and delivery it's how you remain in control of your body, your baby, and your birth experience.
It is because of Sarah's story, that her sister-in-law is now considering having a second child. Mamas empowering other mamas, that's what we are about!
Please WRITE A REVIEW and share how these stories are empowering YOU!
Today you'll hear about birth plans, birth center midwifery care, long labors, urinary catheters, birth mantras, informed consent, hospital transfer, appropriately utilized Pitocin, postpartum hemorrhage, and birth preferences.
All the love,
Sarah

Do you know how to choose the right provider and support persons for YOU and your growing family through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum? You only get to do THIS birth ONCE and the team you surround yourself with will have a profound impact on what is already a profound experience.
You might not know all your preferences in the birth world just yet and that’s OK! The purpose of this episode is to get your wheels turning, to help you ask the right questions, reflect on if these providers and support people make you feel supported and safe, and begin to truly uncover what you value most.
So, let’s get inquisitive and get comfortable asking ALL the questions. Hopefully by the end of this episode you’ll feel empowered by the opportunity to learn about your body and birth, and feel motivated to build your dream team!
